When hard drive manufactures move to platters with higher storage densities, it is a good thing all around — the higher the storage density for the platters, the fewer platters are needed to reach the same capacity compared to lower density platters. That means less power is needed and less moving parts are required to make the drive operate. Impress is reporting that Western Digital has quietly updated its Caviar GP line of drives in Asia with a platter density of 334GB in the 1TB capacity drive. Other features of …
Logitech G51, good speaker
The G51 system consists of seven main pieces. There are five speakers: two satellites for the front left and right channels, two satellites with longer cords for the rear left and right channels, and a center channel that is essentially the same unit turned on its side. Each corner satellite measures 8.5 by 5.6 by 4.2 inches, while the center channel measures 5.6 by 8.0 by 3.9. In addition to the five satellites, there’s a 13.1 by 7.7 by 10.4-inch subwoofer module with a single, downward-firing, high-excursion 5-inch woofer. A …
Samsung SyncMaster 2232GW
The 2232GW’s glossy black cabinet sports subtle curves and a thin bezel, giving it a sleek, modern look likely to jazz up even the drabbest of desktops. The 1,680-by-1,050 glossy panel (shine courtesy of Samsung’s MagicClear coating) attaches to its oval base via a snap-in hinge that provides tilt maneuverability, but I found the mechanism to be a bit too stiff for one-handed adjustments. Height, pivot, and swivel adjustability are not available on this model.
Samsung Set to Introduce 200MB/sec
Samsung today is taking tackling the opposite end of the pricing spectrum with its new 256GB SSDs which it plans to introduce later this year. Samsung’s new SATA II SSD should obliterate the competition with read speeds of 200MB/sec and write speeds of an amazing 160MB/sec. This compares to 120MB/sec and 40MB/sec respectively for Super Talents latest SSDs. Even Mtron falls far behind Samsung’s new 256GB SSD with read speeds of 120MB/sec and write speeds of 100MB/sec.
